- Young Greens Disability Group Liberation Officer
Candidate Statement
The events of the past few years have shown just how crucial it is to have not only progressive and radical, but also marginalised voices within wider politics and the party. Now, more than ever, there is an increasing awareness of the vital need for social and environmental justice.
I am standing for the position of the Disability Group Liberation Officer as amplifying the voices of disabled young greens is crucial for the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion within the young greens. I believe that I can contribute to this as part of the Young Greens exec as a liberation officer.
If elected as the Disability Group Liberation officer I would:
- Be committed to amplifying disabled voices within the young greens
- Improve the accessibility of all young greens content, campaigns and events
- Work towards establishing a fully functioning and self-sufficient Young Greens Disability Group
- Work alongside the young greens disability group to encourage increased involvement and visibility of disabled young greens within the party
I have been an active member of the young greens since joining the party in December 2019 and I believe that I have the experience needed to successfully fulfil this role. For example:
- This year I have been the Co-Chair of the Young Greens Disability Group which has provided me an insight into the importance of, and current issues with, EDI and accessibility both within the party and in wider society. I will utilise the knowledge I have gain from undertaking this role to strive to represent and improve the experience of disabled young greens.
- I have also been the Membership officer for the Midlands young greens providing me with an opportunity to learn about and work within the party on a regional and national scale.
- I took part in the 30 Under 30 Young Greens Training program in 2020 gaining invaluable knowledge and skills surrounding green party policies, organising, campaigning and training. I will draw upon the abundance of knowledge and skills gained from the programme within the role in order to improve the experiences of marginalised members of the Young Greens.
- Additionally, for the last year I have been the disability officer for my students union and within this role I have launched campaigns, planned and held events, put together and held disability awareness training sessions and have pushed for increased accessibility in high level meetings within my union and uni. This role has given me a wealth of experience and organising skills which I will be able to utilise to contribute to the Young Greens exec.
Recent discourse surrounding EDI and accessibility within the party is very encouraging, but we still have a long way to go. I believe that I have the experience, drive and passion to successfully undertake the role of the Disability Group Liberation officer.
Thank you for reading my statement and I hope you consider voting for me as your Disability Group Liberation officer.
