Candidate Statement
I am putting myself forward to be your Co-chair as it becomes clear that over recent months, though it feels like a lifetime, that there is still a long way to go in the fight against systematic racism and prejudice. I think that as a political party we address these problems by not only calling out racism but also making sure that people of colour are being elected so that we are better represented at all levels of government. In short, that is why I want to take on this role to ensure that Young Greens of Colour are getting the support they need when battling a system that is ultimately stacked against them.
As a Young Green of Colour, I come with the experience of being a candidate in multiple elections and know the challenges that we face when it comes to changing the narrative that we currently face. I also currently hold the position of Midlands Young Greens and feel the skills that I have learned and am still learning will help me, alongside an experienced co-chair and passionate committee, in setting up a group that has to be started from the bottom up.
Working alongside Nannette Youssef we should be able to build a group that can effectively set about addressing the problem which is Young BAME representation in local government. As it stood in 2018 95.8% of councillors identified as non-white and only 10% of councillors being under the age of 40 which just shows how much work we as a group have to create change for the better
