Candidate Statement
Our society is facing an unprecedented wave of interconnected crises. From the global pandemic to economic disaster, climate chaos to soaring inequality - the deep flaws in our broken neoliberal economic and political system have been made crystal clear for all to see.
Decades of cuts and privatisation have decimated our public services, removed crucial safety nets, and caused untold damage to our social fabric. Our democratic systems have been rigged, and our trade unions gagged. Even now, with less than ten years to avert catastrophic climate chaos, those in power are adamant on protecting profit, not people, nor planet.
All this requires that we take urgent steps away from the old order and begin building a radically democratic, just and sustainable society. With Boris Johnson and the Tories in power, and Labour’s new leadership slinking back to the right, it’s vital that we build powerful movements of resistance.
As young people and students, we have a crucial role to play in demanding and forcing a better future. From the school strike movement and the UCU strikes, to the Deliveroo riders and young hospitality workers fighting for fair pay, we’ve proven our power.
In the Young Greens, we can deliver transformative change as part of these movements, and in building power in our schools, campuses and universities and delivering impact with our campaigns.
Let’s create and grow a Green Students Network. Let’s reactivate our Green Students Committee, deliver a powerful new training programme for student groups and societies and let’s deliver campaigns that leverage student power and deliver impact on and beyond our campuses
Let’s ramp up our Programme of Political Education. Let’s expand our series of online talks and training to include carefully crafted training programmes, build relationships with our guest speakers and like-minded organisations, and ramp up our promotion to reach new and bigger audiences to grow our network.
Let’s get another wave of radical Young Green Councillors elected. In the current crisis, local government and services have shown their true value. We must ensure they’re harnessed to deliver progressive change in our communities. Young Green candidates are ready to fight tooth and nail to make this happen, so let’s get them into power next May. Coronavirus has meant that we may have to be creative with our methods, but we’re ready for that challenge.
I’m Rosie and I’m re-standing for Co-Chair of the Young Greens of England and Wales because I think I can make these things happen. In the last year and a half as Co-Chair, I have:
Co-written and delivered an ambitious General Election Strategy which mobilised more than a hundred Young Greens to campaign in target seats across the country.
Led on a powerful online Political Education Programme in response to the coronavirus crisis, seeing more than 600 individuals sign up to at least one event, and many continue to return to our other events.
Played a key role in delivering a newly shaped “30 under 30” programme, focussing on an intensive three day residential programme, and opening up our following training sessions to the wider membership (though these had to be online due to lockdown).
I have been an active organiser in the Young Greens for over seven years now, formerly on the South East Young Greens Committee, as a founder and Co-Chair of the Oxford Young Greens group, and active in the UEA Young Greens while at university.
I also have experience of delivering local face-to-face and mass online campaigns, having worked as a full-time elected officer the Union of UEA Students, a Political Organiser for the People's Assembly Against Austerity, and a Digital Campaigns Manager at Oxfam GB.
