Candidate Statement
I'm Jane and I am standing for a Non-Portfolio Officer role, with a view to expanding the relatively new political education 'curriculum' the Young Greens has been developing. I am a teacher of geography and chemistry, and hold a PhD in natural resources - finding out how and why people value the natural environment and how that influences their actions. Combined with my experience as secretary of the London Young Greens (LYGs) committee for the 2019/20 year and a member of the Young Greens 30Under30 cohort for 2020, I believe I have the relevant skills - and enthusiasm(!) - to continue to develop, expand and promote the Young Greens' political education offerings.
In our Winter Gathering last year, the LYGs brought some very interesting panel discussions to the event which focused not just on campaigning, but why we are all part of the Green Party and what we stand for. The feedback we received based on this shift in focus was overwhelmingly positive. Similarly, the Young Greens began their political education with the 30Under30 launch in Birmingham, later brining it online during lockdown. It was fantastic to see how well received it was, and how useful these discussions were to help us discover where we lay on the Green political spectrum.
Therefore, I feel that the Young Greens should capture this momentum and expand their political education offering to help members get to grips with their own political values and how to use those values to generate action. Now is the time to engage a new wave of young people who are keen to understand how to fight for the environment and social justice, so we need to take advantage of that and help them find their footing. This might be through more tailored political education talks and workshops (online and in-person), continued book club discussions, and may eventually even lead to an even wider programme of skills development for members - similar to 30Under30.
Of course, as Non-Portfolio Officer (as with my previous secretary role), I would not just be available for political education; I am always willing to get stuck in with any project. I had a fantastic time working with the LYGs, so would be honoured to be part of the national Young Greens committee - and hope to count on your vote!
