Candidate Statement
Our Education sector has the potential to provide transformative change for all who enter it but it’s facing huge challenges from senior managements and the current Government. The pandemic has destabilised our Higher Education sector and threatened to create an even more marketised system that doesn’t put education or students at the heart. This process has already been well underway but the recent weeks have shown that students are being forgotten.
It’s time that the Young Greens students defend our right to an education.
We need an education sector that is committed to providing the best education to any who wish to access it. We need to support our international students that are subject to harsh regulatory requirements, to fight alongside our fixed term and casual contract staff that work in uncertain conditions and to stand alongside minority students that are activity discriminated against within our Universities. We need open and accountable institutions that are not run for profit but are there to educate, develop and support anyone who wishes to learn.
To do this I want the Young Green Student Committee to focus on three areas for the next year.
Working with individual Students Unions, and students groups, to effect change at their institutions.
Working with NUS, UCU and other national education based campaigns such as CoronaContract, PandemicPGRs and UniNotBorders, to support them in their work and to help them create change.
Encouraging and supporting Young Greens to engage with their Student Unions and the wider sector to raise our voices to bring the Green vision to the student population.
I’ve been a Sabbatical Officer at the University of York’s Graduate Students’ Association since September 2019. Throughout that time I’ve been working to support students and raise their voices through two periods of Industrial Action and the onset of a global pandemic. I’ve been working to represent postgraduate students and to make my University one where students can effect change and where students can be bold. I’ve been re-elected for a second term in my role and I plan to spend the year campaigning for the University to make radical changes to the way it functions and supports students.
I’m well-acquainted with the structures that limit changes within education and I know how to navigate them to effect change. I know how to work with large bodies of students and within Students Unions’ to create and influence policy, elections and campaigns. I hope you’ll vote for me to be Young Green Student Committee Co-convenor.
