Candidate Statement
The Young Greens has 6,500 Members, But only a small fraction of them are active.
We’ve made great progress in increasing activity in regions all across England, but these successes shouldn’t be overstated.
Progress has been great to see, but the fact remains that we need to future proof our regions. People will graduate university or move to other parts of the country; when this happens it usually leads to leaderless regions with no clear successor and all progress made towards creating well organised and active regions is lost.
So, we need to engage a wider proportion of our membership and make an effort to make the Young Greens more accessible: especially to those at the lower end of the income scale. One way to do this is to embrace digital solutions in our democratic processes and events, though admittedly that comes with its own problems. I’ve already taken action on this by co-writing and proposing a resolution that would see us implement digital participation by 2022 convention if passed.
In addition, we also need to expand our training schemes. Expanding 30 under 30 would be an obvious solution, but it’s important to keep in mind how resource intensive it is; We need to think about alternatives.
In addition to future proofing our regions, we also need more local groups: Especially in the north — We can’t have active regions without local groups, and it’s up to us to pass down the right knowledge and skills to local and regional leaders.
The more active people we have, the stronger our voice becomes; Whether that’s being a strong left voice in the party, fighting for climate and social justice or continuing to unequivocally support trans rights, and that’s why I should be your first choice for non-portfolio officer.
I only joined the Green Party in September 2019, but I’m currently Elections officer for Manchester Young Greens and I recently took over as the Convenor of North West Young Greens. I’m also a social media volunteer for LGBTIQA+ Greens and have produced graphics for all the groups I mentioned.
