Candidate Statement
Hi, I’m Ellie and I am running for the position of co-chair for Young Green Women committee. I want to represent Young green women as I am consistently inspired by the amazing young female voices I see within the climate justice movement and social justice activism and would like to provide a platform to further support and amplify these voices.
As a female neuroscience graduate, I have come to understand the importance of supporting women within industry and all the support required to encourage women entering various industries. During my time at university I worked with Women in STEM, reaching out to female students in local schools to encourage them to continue engage with subjects that have remained male dominated. I found this incredibly rewarding, talking with impressive and ambitious young women and would like to be able to continue to support women in this way.
I am a passionately intersectional feminist and environmentalist, with a good understanding of the importance of diverse viewpoints to support all people who identify as women within the green party. I am also keen to continue learning how to extend and develop my understanding of intersectionality, and the role this will play in the fight for climate justice.
I have been involved in debate within the Green Party in which I represented myself as a strong trans-ally, supporting my trans siblings by voicing my views at Green talks, as well as attending trans protests and rallies in Bristol. This is a subject that is close to my heart. I believe trans women are women, trans men are men, and non-binary identities are valid and that these concepts should form a part of any intersectional feminists’ ideologies.
I am proud to be a Green Party member because it is the only party I view as supporting women in a healthy and constructive way, meaning it is the only political party in which I could ever feel at home. I want to continue and build upon this narrative, and build a support system in which all young Green women can feel comfortable to express their views and to support other Green women, providing a home for anyone who, like me, is passionate about Green policy and proud to be a woman.
My main aim as co-chair of Young Green Women is deceptively simple. It is to reinforce the party’s policies.
In the 12 months that i hope to serve as co-chair of the YGW i aim to achieve the following
- Raise the profile of influential green women both in and beyond the party. – i was originally inspired to join the green party upon listening to a talk by councillor carla denyer. Hearing from such an inspirational politician and scientist instilled me with great enthusiasm for the party. I would like to provide other young women with the same opportunity to be inspired in the same way.
- Provide an open forum for all people who identify as women
- Increase the accessibility of our core messages within and beyond the party
- Provide communication training for women entering public life
- Act as a sounding board for young women to ensure their voice and concerns are heard within the party
- Support local green women who are campaigning
- To contribute to the tradition of a strong female voice within the party and amplify new female voices
- Help clarify the strong connectivity beween the issues of feminism and climate change
I have a good understanding of what is required to run a successful society having been part of the running of two health-care related societies within university (Bristol Donors and Alzheimer’s Research UK). Working as an ARUK student ambassador I helped to set up and grow the society using social media platforms and events and hope to bring the skills I learnt through this into YGW. I had the role of sectary within Bristol Donors which gave me a good understanding of key organisational elements of a committee.
