Candidate Statement
As under-18s, we are even more disproportionately underrepresented in our sub-party and in our party as a whole. As Under-18s Green co-chair, my aim will be to change this by engaging our young people early, and treating them as political beings that need a vehicle to have their opinions channeled through. I aim to make the Young Greens that party, as we know young people agree with us the most on the issues, as demonstrated through the recent Climate Strikes that I took part in, we need to be the effective political voice for the young people of today.
My experience in this field is through my work as head of the Green group on my school's elected parliament. When you engage with young people, and treat them as functioning people with complex opinions, you can gain their trust and gain their support, something vital for our parties' continued growth going into the future. This method is successful, we became the largest group on our school council, and we were able to get change done through our support for sustainability. This support was built on personalising politics for young people, not just mass movements; but talking to young people about the issues on their minds and the issues they face.
Even with the underrepresenation of under-18s in the party, there is an even greater underrepresentation of rural under-18s, of which I am. I'm from my beloved Northamptonshire, a primarily rural county in one of our worst performing regions of the East Midlands. As an active member of my local party, we feel that we are overlooked by the national party, and that prevents us from gaining a base of support here, feeding a cycle of poor Green results. Our young people are brought up in this environment where the only left-of-centre party option is Labour, despite the Greens being such a great choice for so many young people. As Under-18s Greens co-chair, I will push to get more attention to these overlooked regions and make sure that everyone, everywhere, has a chance to support us.
