Candidate Statement

I am running to be a member of the Democratic and Accountability Committee this year after spending the last year as one of the Green Students Committee co-covenors.

Why I am suitable for the role

  • As student trustee of my SU, I’ve had experience with constitutions and by-laws. I am currently part of the working group that is re-writing my SU’s constitution. I am also part of the Governance sub-committee. These roles have provided me with invaluable experience in upholding constitutions and undertaking scrutiny of elected officials as well as giving me an in-depth insight into governance structures and constitutional know-how.
  • Having been part of the Young Green Executive this past year, I have become well accustomed to our Constitution which will enable me to uphold and make rulings on it effectively.
  • Through co-covening the Green Students committee over the past year, I’m well accustomed to organising a committee as well as chairing committee meetings which stands me in good stead if I were to be nominated as DAC chair.
  • I’ve been a part of a Green Party working group so I also understand the process of policy development and what makes a good policy. This will be valuable in supporting the membership in creating policies at our conferences.

My goals if elected

  • My first and foremost priority if elected is to ensure the Young Greens Executive are held accountable and are acting within the Constitution. This is to make sure those making decisions are doing so fairly and representatively.
  • One of my main goals if elected is to get more members engaged in Young Green democracy and to see more members attend our democracy sessions. Young people usually turn off democracy and think it’s dry but I think I have the creativity and the energy to get members participating in our democratic processes. Whether that’s making democracy sessions more relaxed and fun or through DAC and the Young Greens Exec creating an effective social media plan informing members of how important membership engagement is for the prosperity of Young Greens’ democracy.
